Facilitate Learning
Through the development of two presentations using social learning theory (one of which is my final project), I helped facilitate learning by drawing on years of experience in my field of specialty, coupled with evidence-based research. I used this experience and research to develop engaging, informative presentations that prepared nursing students for common workplace issues they would encounter. For my own learning, I kept a detailed log of all activities I participated in. From these logs, I analyzed what I had gained and what I wanted to explore further or improve.
Facilitate Learner Development and Socialization
I have participated as both an actor and facilitator in many simulations and student debriefings. The simulations covered summative assessments of medication administration, sterile procedures, mental health de-escalation techniques, and head-to-toe assessments. I use a warm, welcoming approach to encourage students to communicate and interact with one another while using their critical-thinking skills. I am diligent in conveying to students that there is no shame in asking questions. When I see a student off to the side, or one that appears to be struggling, I do not hesitate to try to understand their situation through quiet conversation and exploring their fears, concerns, or obstacles to being the best student they can be. I enjoy every opportunity to engage with students and encourage them to keep learning by showing them the joy in nursing.
Use Assessment and Evaluation Strategies
While participating in various simulations and check-offs, I applied assessment and evaluation strategies I learned in my courses. Those strategies ranged from developing and using evidence-based questions to having students give live demonstrations of their skills and abilities for us to observe and analyze.
Participate in Curriculum Design and Evaluation of Program Outcomes
I designed a curriculum section, along with learning objectives, to understand the development and prevention of pressure injuries. Along with this presentation, several test questions were also designed to help evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching. My final project provided another opportunity to design a curriculum and evaluate the effectiveness of the presentation. When grading online submissions, I provided timely, constructive feedback to learners so they could adapt to expectations before their next assignment was due.
Function as a Change Agent and Leader
From joining faculty meetings to joining nursing development organizations, I continue to position myself to grow as a change agent and leader. By understanding what is occurring in the nursing profession and the expected changes, I am working to ensure my voice is heard and that I can contribute meaningfully when I am fully engaged as a nurse educator. I also participated in several interprofessional virtual programs to address healthcare, health policy, and educational needs, while helping to shape the future healthcare team.
Pursue Continuous Quality Improvement in the Role of Nurse Educator
By continuously studying the most up-to-date resources on curriculum construction, test question development, and learning theories, and by participating in professional development, I will continue to focus on quality improvement as a nurse educator. I will continue to seek opportunities to enhance my skills as a nurse educator and to act on my mentors’ suggestions to further develop myself. My future goal is to pursue my doctoral degree.
Engage in Scholarship
Utilizing evidence-based practices and resources, I will continue to develop my nursing and teaching knowledge. Relying on my expertise in patient education and wound care, I will design and implement activities that engage student nurses and help excite them about patient care. My graduate project is intended to be applicable to a variety of audiences once it is completed, though the current focus is on nursing students.
Function within the Educational Environment
Understanding the history of nursing and how it has evolved is important for advancing it further. This is done through understanding trends, issues, roles, and limitations in higher education. By participating in a variety of nursing organizations that work to grow nurses and the field of nursing, I can partner with others to effect change at multiple levels. Involvement in organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau allows me to develop mentor-mentee relationships where I can collaborate with more experienced nurse educators. The veteran nurse educator’s knowledge and experience can help shape my future by modeling a desire for growth, continued learning, and professional development. Experiencing the educational environment outside the classroom included participating in faculty meetings and joining discussions on budgeting, laws, staffing decisions, and program development.
